We all live by a set of standards and expectations that we place on ourselves and each other. However, the issue arises when these standards and expectations do not align with what God expects from us. When we impose our own standards on others and judge them accordingly, we effectively place ourselves in the position of God. God is calling us to move away from this mentality. (Romans 12:2)
We are called to live a life of love, allowing each other the room to grow while we lovingly confront and encourage one another in faith.(Ephesians 4:2) This mutual encouragement builds us up as our minds are renewed by the truth of the gospel, which teaches us about God and His expectations for us (see Romans 12:2, Galatians 6:1, Matthew 7:15-20).
So, what does God expect from us? He expects us to bear with one another, as each of us has been given a measure of faith. We are encouraged to live in our freedoms, but not in a way that causes our brothers and sisters to stumble. Our focus should always be on others, looking for opportunities to uplift one another in faith rather than seeking to boast in our own freedom or condemn others based on our self-righteousness.
These attitudes can lead to division and discord within the community. We must be careful not to use our lives as a benchmark to judge others and speak ill of them. Instead, we should search our hearts to identify any wrongdoing within ourselves.(Psalm 139:23-24) Then, we can go to our brother or sister and speak in a way that reflects the life God has called us to, fostering mutual growth in faith.(Ephesians 4:13)
Oh, that we would live this out in the church!
Father, confront us with your truth and help us walk in the Spirit for our sake and for those around us.
