For Christians, the fundamental guiding principle is love. Does love govern your life? This question carries significant implications. In this chapter, Paul reminds the readers that love fulfills the essence of the law. This aligns with Scripture, as Jesus himself said, “I have not come to abolish the law, but to fulfill it” (Matthew 5:17, Matthew 22:36-40, Galatians 5:14). The law is good and necessary because it distinguishes the righteous from the unrighteous. For believers, Christ has become our righteousness, fulfilling the law on our behalf (Romans 5:1-2, 2 Corinthians 5:21).

Those who do not believe are accountable for the entirety of the law and the consequences that come with it. However, for believers, when we view the law through the lens of love, it becomes a guide to determine whether we are acting in love. Are we committing adultery? That is not loving. Are we stealing? That is not loving. Are we coveting? That is not loving. If we truly love our neighbors with the love given to us by God’s free gift, we will prioritize their well-being over our own interests (Philippians 2:3).

This love reflects the very nature of God, which is received by those who believe and are being transformed into His likeness (1 John 4:16, Romans 12:2, 1 Corinthians 13). Paul writes for our sanctification, urging us to distance ourselves from and kill the sin that dwells within us. He challenges us to wake up from our spiritual slumber and not be deceived by the temptations of the flesh that lead to death. Instead, we should be alert to the truth of what God has in store for us in Christ Jesus (Galatians 5:1, 2 Peter 1:3).

This message is consistent in Galatians, Paul acknowledges the inner struggle we face—a battle between the Spirit and the flesh. We are called to distance ourselves from the desires of the flesh and not to feed them. If you are struggling with sin, consider what provisions you might be making for it. Pray for the Lord to reveal it for what it truly is. Do not justify it! If you live by the Spirit, you will not fulfill the desires of the flesh (Romans 7:23, Galatians 5:16-17, Galatians 5:25).

Father, open our eyes to the ways we indulge in the desires of the flesh, so we can lay them down and live for You. Transform our cravings from those for sin and pleasure to a deep hunger and thirst for righteousness.
