Funeral for Friends P38

Are you willing? In John chapter 2, Jesus attended a wedding party when His mother informed Him that they had run out of wine. Jesus looked at her and said, “What does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” However, His mother told those around her, “Do whatever He says.” This is excellent advice from Mary: do whatever Jesus says.

Now, imagine being there when Jesus instructs you to fill the jars used for ceremonial washing with water. Would you be willing to follow His command? You decide to listen, so you fill the jars with water. Then Jesus says, “Draw some out and bring it to the master of the feast.” You do as instructed, and the master of the feast is amazed because the water has turned into fine wine. The jars that were originally filled with water for ceremonial cleansing have now become wine.

Interestingly, a time will come when Jesus will give His life so that we can be clean. Scripture tells us that without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness of sins (Hebrews 9:22). The simple act of obeying Jesus by filling the jars became an act that conveyed the gospel to all those at the wedding feast.

Are you willing to listen and obey, even when it doesn’t make sense? When you sense the prompting of the Spirit of God, will you listen and obey?

Will you follow Jesus? That’s an easy question to answer. The tough question is, how far are you willing to go? Are you willing to quit the thing you enjoy (alcohol, drugs, porn, gossip)? Are you willing to give up your time to serve Him? Are you willing to die a horrible death for Him the way His disciples did? He wants to know the answer to these questions and He asks them periodically by allowing us to be tempted, and seeing how we react. We all fail these tests from time to time, but we must repent and then get back in the fight.
