Funeral for Friends P14

Matthew 5:6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

Take a moment to meditate on this verse. Are we truly satisfied? Too often, we find ourselves longing for things that leave us empty, like consuming thin air, or indulging in substances that poison our souls.

I read a touching story about a place in India where people are cared for in their final days, surrounded by dignity, where life can be discibed as hell on earth. Where people are gathered, cleaned and comforted, and given the gospel as they prepare to leave this world. This aspect of the story is inspiring. However, there’s a heartbreaking reality when the caregivers dispose of the contaminated clothing and bandages. As they place the garbage in dumpsters, children emerge from the shadows, desperate for food, ripping open the trash in search of something to satisfy their hunger. Despite the warnings that the discarded items are poison, their overwhelming hunger leads them to consume whatever they can find—only to discover disease.

What are we truly hungering for? The fleeting satisfaction found in pornography, the sweet bite of gossip that falsely elevates us, or the thrilling escape provided by a movie, a drink, or a drug to avoid reality?

Jesus invites us to hunger and thirst for righteousness, assuring us that we will be satisfied. This means feasting on the Righteous One, who is our life (Colossians 3:4) and turning to the source of true satisfaction (2 Corinthians 5:21). Let us come to God’s table and feast on His word, finding fulfillment.

Jeremiah 15:16
Your words were found, and I ate them,
and your words became to me a joy
and the delight of my heart,
for I am called by your name,
O Lord, God of hosts.

My appetite changes quickly from one thing to another. I love traveling and trying new things. I’ve been blacksmithing recently and it is something I hunger for now.

I didn’t have a hunger for God’s word until moving here. The Bible app has kept me in his word everyday for many years now. It’s the first thing I do each day.

My life is better and more focused on Jesus. I’m glad that I still crave His word.

When I think of the people I know who seem to be joyful and content, even during struggles, it is the people who I know to be strong Christians, people who hunger for righteousness. When I think of my life prior to my hunger for righteousness, it was a more difficult time. I was unsatisfied with my life then. I am so much more content and joyful now, and I know where this joy comes from, my heavenly Father.
