So, why all this self-denial and funeral for friends? It may seem morbid if we don’t understand the purpose behind it. What is that purpose? It is so that we can live a new life in Christ Jesus.
In Colossians 3:5-10, it says:
5 Put to death, therefore, what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. 6 On account of these, the wrath of God is coming. 7 In these, you too once walked when you were living in them. 8 But now you must put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and obscene talk from your mouth. 9 Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices 10 and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator.
As we explore verses that share this theme, we see that Scripture often speaks of putting to death, denying, and releasing our old nature. This indicates that it is important and a common struggle. This reveals the duality of human nature when one is born again. It is as if we are shedding our old life and learning to live in our new identity. Notice how Colossians states that you “once walked” in this way, meaning that this was your former identity—but that is no longer who you are. Therefore, put it away and start living anew.
Together, we are learning to live this new life by turning to Scripture and recognizing the contrast between the two natures so we can put the old one to death. We must do this; otherwise, death overtakes us (Romans 8:13). This is our responsibility in our walk with Christ. Jesus saves us as sinners and then empowers us to say no to sin and yes to righteousness (Galatians 5:1).
Here is a practical list provided by Nasser:
- When people are difficult, bear with them without complaining. However, if someone becomes abusive, seek Christian counsel immediately.
- When they hurt you, forgive them. How much? “Just as the Lord forgave you.”
- When relationships become strained due to conflict, let your love mend the relationship.
- When you feel anxious, allow Christ’s peace to rule in your heart.
- When you are confused, let God’s word “dwell richly in you.”
- In all your actions—walking, talking, sleeping, eating, studying, working, and relating to others—do everything to honor Jesus Christ, who redeemed you.
- Finally, whether in good times or bad, always give thanks to God for His goodness and faithfulness.
Every day, we face the choice to live or to die. Who will you identify with today? How will you practically live out dying to self and being made new in Christ?
As Deuteronomy 30:19 states:
19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today that I have set before you life and death, blessing and curse. Therefore choose life, that you and your offspring may live.
We (FOTH) have great examples of people showing Christ in situations that we would consider hardships. Bill Mantooth praises God through song even when going through cancer. Judy Bosier said she knows how her wheelchair has allowed her to glorify God to others. I hope to be that type of example daily.
There is a war in side us all! The only way through is stay focused on are Father in heaven.
Romans 7:15-20
15 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. 16 And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. 17 As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. 18 For I know that good itself does not dwell in me, that is, in my sinful nature.[a] For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. 19 For I do not do the good I want to do, but the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. 20 Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it1 Corinthians 10:12-14
12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don’t fall! 13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.
“being a Christian is hard” because it often requires going against personal desires, facing challenges in the world, and making difficult choices to live according to Bible teachings, which can involve self-sacrifice, forgiveness, and constant striving to live a life aligned with God’s will; however, the Bible also emphasizes that the rewards and strength found in faith are worth the struggles involved.
